Re-entry into the Job Market

Not all positions are "traditional" jobs. There are several jobs that are not your typical 9-5, Monday through Friday hours. Have you been a stay-at- home parent for the past few years? Were you active in the military and looking to go back into the civilian workforce? Some jobseekers overlook the fact that they are learning and developing their career skills while working their non-"traditional" jobs.

Transitioning into a more traditional workforce is not easy. There are several factors that you need to take in to consideration: finding childcare, converting your military skills to the civilian lifestyle, and learning how to overcome employer objections about your work experience are just a few to consider. Once you have established the outside influences of your job search, you are ready to begin.

So where do you start? You first need to make sure you are fully prepared to dedicate time and energy to your job search. Remember that the minute you start your career search that you have officially started your new full time job. Next, deciding what type of work environment you want to be in will play a big role in your job search. Do you want to be in an office, out in the field, or a mix of both? Lastly, you need to have a top-notch resume to market your transferable skills. There are several different types of resumes to choose from that will ensure you are fully marketing all of the skills you have been developing in your non-traditional position. Do the appropriate research to make sure you create the type that will best fit your needs for your particular search.

In the following articles, you will be able to learn more about how to transition your military experience to the civilian workforce, re-enter the job market from being a stay at home parent, and regain confidence after being laid-off from your previous position.
