What It Takes to Survive and Thrive in Today's Market
For many people, getting just any job—or hanging onto a current job—isn't enough; they want to see their career grow and thrive. So while it may seem hard enough simply to find a position these days, don't lose heart. It is possible to find one that is as enjoyable as it is personally and professionally rewarding. Here are a few strategies in your current job to help make sure you are in a position to achieve your career goals and thrive in today's job market.

Show interest in extra projects and volunteer for more duties. Actions can speak louder than words. You need to demonstrate that you are interested in taking on more responsibility—and willing to take the initiative to do so. But don't neglect your current job. Before you take on extra responsibilities, it is very important to first excel in every aspect of your own position.

Demonstrate your leadership ability and maintain a positive attitude. If you are interested in becoming a candidate for a promotion, extra job duties aren't the only important aspect. Your employer is also looking for a leader; someone who can maintain a positive, professional attitude and demeanor no matter what the situation is. If changes are made in your department, and your peers can only see the down side, don't flock with the group. Maintaining a professional, positive outlook will get you noticed.

Communicate your career goals. Let your manager know you are interested in moving up. He or she may offer feedback on your performance or suggest areas for improvement, which can only help you in your pursuit of career success. Networking with others in your organization is also helpful. It never hurts to get your name out there. And don't be afraid to vocalize your accomplishments. But be discreet; bragging can easily change a good impression into a bad one.

Keep your education current-always. If you want to keep moving up the career ladder, your educational level should be one step above your experience level throughout your professional life. That means you have to make time for training, degrees, certifications, and anything else that will qualify you for your next position.
