Q.
I went from being an Advertising Manager to a stay-at-home mom for 8 years. I am having trouble entering the market at the same level. If I can't make that transition, how do I go from management to staff?
A. That is a great question, and it looks like you are bracing yourself for some realistic expectations. It is extremely challenging to enter the workforce at the same level you left it, even if for only a year. Being away for the job market for 8 years is a long time, and you should expect that there have been changes in the market. Not only have there been advances in technology, but also in the way companies do business. Things are continuously evolving.
Depending on your specific background, you may not have to enter back into the workforce as "entry level" however you should expect to take a step back. This could move you from the management chair back into a staff level; however the transition could be a great way to ease you back into career life. If you see this as a positive opportunity to reacquaint yourself into your career, leaving the "know all" manager mentality behind, you may find yourself excelling back into your old position in no time. Just remember, with hard work, your career should evolve, just like the markets do.
