At AIU Online, we are very proud of our alumni. Many of them have soared to greatness after earning their degrees at our university. Recently, we had a conversation with graduate school alumnus, Emil Bacy, who has many thoughts to share about education and the benefits of obtaining a degree online.
Q. Why did you decide to further your education?
A. I got my B.A. in Arts and History in '96 from Paul Quinn College in Dallas, Texas. My degree was in history, so unless I was planning to teach or go to law school, it was difficult to get a good job. So I decided to go to grad school to get a more marketable degree.
Q. Why did you select an online university for graduate schoolspecifically AIU Online?
A. Well, at first I was driving to a school in Dallas that was 100 miles away, and it was taking so long to get from my hometown (Waco) to school, that I was always late. My wife suggested that I try an online school. At first, I looked into Regis, and they didn't have what I was looking for, so I kept looking and found AIU Online. That's when my story began.
Q. What degrees did you earn, and when did you graduate?
A. I got my first MBA-my MBA in general businesson December 10, 2004; and on March 19 of this year, I got my MBA in Accounting in Finance. I needed them both for what I wanted to do.
Q. So, you were driving 100 miles, and working full time?
A. Yes. I was working full time as a domestic engineer40 hours a week. It was really rough. I was tired all the time.
Q. How was your AIU Online experience?
A. It was great! The instructors were good; the books came in fast. Everyone at AIU Online was willing to help me immediately. Sometimes, if you call a school for help, they'll tell you that they will call you back in a few days. Not at AIU Online. I always had everything I needed that same day.
Q. Would you recommend an online university?
A. I got my degrees fast. BUT it's a heavier workload. When you take online courses, the workload is much larger. For me, it was better to take courses online. But you have to have discipline because you're online every day, Monday through Sunday. You don't get a day off. For me, the hard work was completely worth it.
Q. Do you have your dream job yet?
A. Not yet. I'm still a domestic engineer, but I'm applying for jobs, and sending résumé online. Eventually I want to be a Forensic Accountant, which is an accountant who investigates fraudulent bookkeeping. They're like the CSIs of accounting. I have to get my CPA, and then I have to take the Fraud Examiners' Exam. After that, I'll become a Certified Forensic Accountant. So, in the meantime, I have to work at an accounting firm until I can get my certifications and take my tests.
Q. It sounds like you still have some work to do
A. Yes, but I'll get it done. I don't believe in giving up! Never say "quit"!
