Hot Trends in Careers - Criminal Justice

If you're looking for a position that's exciting, rewarding, and beneficial to society, consider a career in criminal justice. The recent popularity of forensic crime shows on television has made criminal justice a desirable career choice for many students.

A criminal justice major has knowledge of the legal and correction systems in the US, the philosophy of punishment and deterrence of crimes, and the ethical codes of behavior.

A sample list of careers in criminal justice includes positions at the local, state and federal levels, or positions in private organizations such as law firms. Further, careers in criminal justice can be divided into three categories - law enforcement, the correction system and the court system.

The most visible careers in criminal justice are police officers, parole officers, FBI agents and crime investigators. However, it's important not to overlook other valuable criminal justice careers, such as researcher for law enforcement agencies and correctional institutions; auxiliary personnel in specialized fields of communication and laboratory work; private investigative agencies; counselors; rehabilitation counselors; staff personnel in private youth agencies such as Big Brother/Big Sister programs, halfway houses, and residential treatment centers.

In addition, criminal justice can be an excellent program for students who are planning to further their education

Graduates who have earned Associate's degrees are eligible for entry-level positions in municipal and county agencies. Most police departments require new recruits to have completed some college training.

A Bachelor's degree is required for most state and federal positions and is becoming increasingly important for municipal and county positions.

A career in criminal justice is perfect for people who enjoy teamwork, problem-solving, and a fast-paced working environment. It also appeals to people with strong patriotic tendencies or moral convictions. If doing the right thing for the right reason is important to you, you could be ready to join the many dedicated professionals in the industry.
