Q.
How do I know which industry to pursue now that I have my degree?
A. That is a very important question! There are many things to look at when you are entering the workforce with your new degree. Whether you are looking to break into or move ahead in information technology, education and training, business, graphic design, or criminal justice, there are dozens of industry options. For example, if you recently received your degree in information technology, what industries are available? The question is really: What industries aren't available! Almost every company has a computer network. That could be anything from working for a dining or retail chain, to working for a hospital. Evaluating your interests will answer the important questions that will help you determine what the best fit is for you. Are you drawn to a customer service type industry or a mechanical/auto industry? Start with the companies you support, or share the same culture with and products you are interested in learning about.
Another important question is: Do you have experience in a particular industry? Put together a list of industries that you have worked in at some point of your previous work experience and start from there. Of course, eliminate the industries you really don't like, and then begin researching the companies that you have worked for, their competitors, and begin the job search. This will not only give you a good idea of where to start your job search, but it can also give you a competitive advantage over other candidates who may not know the industry well.
