  The Job Search Is On
Job Search Basics
Often times, the New Year brings new resolutions and goals for many people.  Among many of those, earning more money or finding a better job is often on the list.  But, if you are embarking on the job search journey, where do you start and what are the steps for a successful job search?

Refresh that Résumé
Whether it has been months or even decades since you've looked for a job make sure to give that résumé a make-over. There usually are new projects or duties you can add if you haven't updated your résumé since your last position. If you are looking for a similar type of job, a chronological résumé may be the right choice for you. If you are making a career change or have minimal experience, a functional résumé could be a better fit.

Job Search Etiquette
There is much more to a job search than just sending a good résumé. It is important to include a cover letter to introduce yourself and your skills to potential employers. Your cover letter should also state what job you are applying for and what makes you the right person for the job. You are also providing a sample of your written and communication skills, so be sure to be professional and fix those grammar or spelling mistakes!

Having a letter of recommendation is also a great way to show what kind of work ethic you have. It can be very effective to have a 3rd party remark on your accomplishments and skills. These letters should be from someone who knows you as a professional and will cover characterization of you, your overall demeanor, and the degree they will recommend you for the position.

The next step of the job search is the interview. There are many unwritten rules to interviewing, and good manners are among the most important. Be sure to dress neatly, arrive for your interview early, be courteous, look the interviewer in the eye, and have a firm handshake. Maintaining a professional image is essential. It is also important to greet the receptionist or assistant with courtesy and respect. You never know who will be involved in making a recommendation. Make sure you listen carefully throughout the interview and stay professional. Don't tell jokes, or get too personal. Asking thoughtful questions at the end of the interview shows you are interested and that you have put some thought into this position.

After the interview, thank-you letters or emails are a must. These brief notes show you are courteous, knowledgeable and professional. It will also help you stand out amongst many other potential candidates who may not have bothered to write them. Thank-you letters also confirm your interest in the position and topics discussed during the interview.

Finishing Touches
Other important job search factors are how to effectively negotiate salary offers. To know what to expect before you are extended an offer, research the competitive wage for your level of experience and type of position.

You may also be lucky enough to be faced with multiple job offers. It is important to establish your priorities for what is most important to you while evaluating offers. Are you most interested in a high salary? Excellent benefits? Growth potential? Location? Schedule? Job satisfaction? Once you decide what is most important for you, you will be able to weigh the offers and get a better idea of which positions are a better fit for you.
