Art for the Sake of Teaching
Professor Jon GoebelFor Professor Jon Goebel, doing art is an essential part of teaching art. "I think being out there and doing your own art—staying active in the art world—is equally, if not more important, for a teacher than any academic training they might have."

Goebel, a professor in AIU Online's Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program, recently wrapped up a show, entitled The Exchange, at Monmouth University's Rotary Icehouse Gallery (close to his home in New Jersey). But that is only one of the many shows he has had since graduating from Texas Tech with his MFA.

Inspired by the likes of Warrington Colescott, Bill Fick, Tom Huck and Robert Crumb, Goebel says he doesn't like to think too much before drawing. "I just start drawing. I don't have too much control when I do this, but rather just see things start to evolve and I go with it...or not." And his style can vary widely. Professor Goebel describes the pieces in The Exchange as "a bizarre mix of coincidence, eroticism and surrealism with a touch of comedy." Anything from books to conversations and the minutiae of life inspires him.

But what does this mean for his students? "With me out there doing my own stuff, I'm keeping a fresh perspective and am able to bring that into the classroom. Making artwork and animations, promoting myself, and working in the professional field are all things my students will be dealing with in a few years. Having done it all myself, and having done it all very recently, it's easier for me to answer questions and give real-world advice."

There's also the technology angle. "The technology in the field of design is changing so insanely fast there's no way to keep up with it unless you're doing it regularly."

While Professor Goebel has plenty of real-world experience in art to share, he is just starting to accumulate real-world experience in a new field: child rearing. He and wife Marlene had their first child, Jack, in early April. "It's a whole new world. We're learning something new every day, every hour. I can see it providing a whole new set of inspirations for my art."

And for his teaching. "I know many of my students at AIU Online are raising kids and working full time and then going to school on top of it all. Now I know a little bit better what they're going through. And I appreciate their dedication and efforts even more than ever. They're amazing."
